RYA Courses

RYA is respected worldwide for the quality of its courses. Those offered by the NYS prepare participants for handling boats under 24 metres. The language of the course is English: all manuals on board is in English, as is most of the course material.

Theoretical knowledge at RYA Day Skipper level. Basic grasp of skippering and other crew duties. At least 5 days on board and 100 miles sailed, including 4 hours at night. Recommended: VHF radio operator license and first aid course.

Qualification to skipper a small sailboat in coastal waters and in daytime.
RYA Coastal Skippe r / Yachtmaster theory Theoretical knowledge at RYA day skipper level. Practical experience  with offshore sailing. Advance knowledge of navigation, meteorology, sailing theory and other skills including skippering in tidal waters.
RYA Coastal skipper practical course

Theoretical knowledge at RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster level, practical skills at at least RYA day skipper level. Minimum 15 days on board (of which at least 2 as a skipper), 300 miles sailed including 8 at night. Recommended: VHF radio operator license and first aid course.

The right to skipper boat in coastal waters in day and night.
RYA Yachtmaster Coastal (practical) preparation for examination + RYA MCA test

Theoretical knowledge at at least RYA Yachtmaster level, experience with boat handling and skippering, at least 30 days on board including 2 as skipper, 800 miles including 12 hours at night. Mandatory VHF radio operator license and good knowledge of sailing terminology in English.

Right to skipper boat in coastal waters in day and night. The same theoretical knowledge as Yachtmaster Offshore but not necessarily enough sailing experience with long trips.
RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (practical) preparation for exam + RYA MCA exam

Theoretical knowledge at RYA Yachtmaster level, advanced ability to drive and handle a sailboat, experience skippering.  At least 50 days on board of which minimum 5 as skipper, 2,500 miles or more; at least 5 trips longer than 60 miles, of which at least 2 at night and 2 as skipper. Mandatory VHF radio operator license and good knowledge of sailing terminology in English

Ability to skipper a recreational sailboat on any journey within 150 of shore.

 

Theory courses

Theory courses take place in Brno, usually over two weekends. Participants will be taught basics of meteorology, navigation and rules, including practical examples. The course is taught by experienced instructors, and leads to a certificate of completion.

Dates and prices

Practical courses

Practical courses take place in Croatia, in our home port of Kastela, near Split. We use Beneteau First sailboats. Courses take a week and are led by experienced, RYA-certified instructors. The maximum number of students on board is five. Each day ends in a different port, and the participants will be taught to manoeuvre boat under sail and under engine, at the level corresponding to the course. Each successful participant receives a RYA certification.
